The Athens High School Marching Green and Gold performed at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom on Sunday, March 8! AHS Band Directors Aaron Backes and Whitney Cope guided the students in a parade performance down Magic Kingdom's Main Street USA.

After learning about the history of Mardi Gras and how different people celebrate it in Louisiana, Mme Myers’ French classes enjoyed making masks and eating some traditional King Cake. Three lucky students found the plastic baby baked inside!

Athens City Schools band director Aaron Backes was selected to join a marching band of more than 350 band directors from across North America in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 2026. The Saluting America’s Band Directors project brought together band directors and a colorful float to recognize the extraordinary dedication and accomplishments of band directors and music educators everywhere.

Twenty-eight Athens High School students volunteered at the Southeast Ohio Food Bank, representing both National Honor Society and Key Club.
Together, they packed 965 boxes to support hundreds of families across the food bank’s ten-county region this holiday season. We are incredibly proud of their teamwork, service, and Bulldog pride, which truly reflects the spirit of giving.

In November the Athens FFA represented our chapter proudly with two teams competing at state contests! In Animal Management, two members qualified to compete at the state level, and the team placed 19th overall. Individually, Fern Sigman finished 80th and Jesse Vaughn 104th. An impressive accomplishment out of more than 1,200 members who took the online test.

In November the Athens FFA represented our chapter proudly with two teams competing at state contests! In Aquarium Management, the team earned 17th place in the state. Team members included Zac Shoemaker, Janey Lucas, Jay Irwin, Kaya Fesenmyer, Zara Pittaway, and Saveah Springer.

The AHS French Club had a great time showcasing their creativity while making their own festive yule log cakes. A delicious way to celebrate the season! Bonnes fêtes à tous!

The Athens HS Symphonic Choir shared holiday cheer with hundreds of students at Morrison-Gordon and The Plains Intermediate, as well as Hickory Creek of Athens on day 1 of their Winter Choir Tour. Pictures are from their visit to Morrison-Gordon.

Athens High School students Iris Lee, Gabe Adair, Madi Stein, Gage Rapp, Scarlett Brobeck, and Jo Zulia-Davis were selected to perform with the Ohio University Honor Bands on Saturday, December 6. The honor bands were directed by Dr. William Talley, Director of Bands at Ohio University, and Dr. Richard Suk, Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Ohio University Marching 110.

The following AHS Symphonic Choir members participated in Ohio University Honor Choir last weekend: Marek Ausseresses, Ruby Callahan, Summer Forster, Lucy Isaac, and Jack Phillips.
The Athens students worked with OU music school faculty and selected singers from other districts to prepare a concert in just 2 days. Their concert, led by Director of Choral Activities Dr. Peter Haley, also featured OU ensembles Bella Voce and Singing Men of Ohio.

AHS proudly honored local veterans with a reception and an assembly! The AHS Student Council greeted veterans with an informal reception, read their names to recognize their service, and poems to honor the valor of serving. The band and choir debuted and beautifully performed a collaborative piece, "From Sea to Shining Sea." Mr. John King, the keynote speaker, gave an impactful speech on the importance of volunteerism. Veterans, we thank you for your service!
