Athens City Schools band director Aaron Backes was selected to join a marching band of more than 350 band directors from across North America in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 2026. The Saluting America’s Band Directors project brought together band directors and a colorful float to recognize the extraordinary dedication and accomplishments of band directors and music educators everywhere.

Twenty-eight Athens High School students volunteered at the Southeast Ohio Food Bank, representing both National Honor Society and Key Club.
Together, they packed 965 boxes to support hundreds of families across the food bank’s ten-county region this holiday season. We are incredibly proud of their teamwork, service, and Bulldog pride, which truly reflects the spirit of giving.

In November the Athens FFA represented our chapter proudly with two teams competing at state contests! In Animal Management, two members qualified to compete at the state level, and the team placed 19th overall. Individually, Fern Sigman finished 80th and Jesse Vaughn 104th. An impressive accomplishment out of more than 1,200 members who took the online test.

The AHS French Club had a great time showcasing their creativity while making their own festive yule log cakes. A delicious way to celebrate the season! Bonnes fêtes à tous!

The Athens HS Symphonic Choir shared holiday cheer with hundreds of students at Morrison-Gordon and The Plains Intermediate, as well as Hickory Creek of Athens on day 1 of their Winter Choir Tour. Pictures are from their visit to Morrison-Gordon.

Athens High School students Iris Lee, Gabe Adair, Madi Stein, Gage Rapp, Scarlett Brobeck, and Jo Zulia-Davis were selected to perform with the Ohio University Honor Bands on Saturday, December 6. The honor bands were directed by Dr. William Talley, Director of Bands at Ohio University, and Dr. Richard Suk, Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Ohio University Marching 110.

The following AHS Symphonic Choir members participated in Ohio University Honor Choir last weekend: Marek Ausseresses, Ruby Callahan, Summer Forster, Lucy Isaac, and Jack Phillips.
The Athens students worked with OU music school faculty and selected singers from other districts to prepare a concert in just 2 days. Their concert, led by Director of Choral Activities Dr. Peter Haley, also featured OU ensembles Bella Voce and Singing Men of Ohio.

AHS proudly honored local veterans with a reception and an assembly! The AHS Student Council greeted veterans with an informal reception, read their names to recognize their service, and poems to honor the valor of serving. The band and choir debuted and beautifully performed a collaborative piece, "From Sea to Shining Sea." Mr. John King, the keynote speaker, gave an impactful speech on the importance of volunteerism. Veterans, we thank you for your service!


Our Athens FFA members competed in the District 10 Soil Judging Contest, and they didn’t let the weather dampen their spirits. The Ag Soil Judging Team (Jay Irwin, Fern Sigman, Zac Shoemaker, Bailey Ewing, and Violet Blick placed 4th in the district and are advancing to the State Soil Judging Competition

Our Forestry Team competed in the state contest — a first for Athens FFA! We’re proud of their effort and excited to build on what we learned for next year. Huge shoutout to Emmett Reese, Fern Sigman, Zac Shoemaker, Marley Christman, and Bailey Ewing for stepping up and trying something new!

Big congratulations to our Athens FFA Soil Judging Teams! Both the Ag and Urban teams practiced their skills during our first contest of the year. Our Ag Soils Team took 1st place at the Multi-County Soil Judging Contest! Special shoutout to Fern Sigman, who placed 1st individually, and Zac Shoemaker, who earned an impressive 3rd place! Great job representing Athens FFA with knowledge and pride!

AHS honored Patriot Day with a thoughtful reflection led by Principal April Stewart, who shared a summary of the events of 9/11 and how they forever changed our nation and its people. During morning announcements, an AHS student shared powerful quotes in remembrance. To close the tribute, the Symphonic Choir performed the Pledge of Allegiance in the atrium, filling the school with music and unity.

The AHS Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on August 22 at Athens High School, celebrating the achievements of outstanding Bulldog athletes and contributors. This year’s inductees were also recognized during the home football game, where the community joined in honoring their lasting impact on AHS athletics, Don McInturf, Rick Mansfield, Catherine Gorman Brown and Steve Abdella.

The AHS chapter of National Honor Society and yearbook staff members took a trip to COSI in Columbus, exploring science, history, and everything in between—plus a stop at the Dinosaur Gallery!

Athens FFA members spent the day working with the Athens Soil and Water Conservation District to help them count and wrap trees that will be planted in several different counties in Southeastern Ohio and West Virginia. Even though it was a little chilly, our students enjoyed the day.

Three FFA members attended the State FFA Nature Interpretation career development event at Hocking College, where they used skulls, skins, pictures and furs to identify various wildlife samples and provided responses to questions concerning wildlife attraction, water quality evaluation and the control of problem plants and animals.

AHS students Prem Koshal, Aviva Wood, Sophia Szolosi and Vlada Kiryukhin earned the award of Southeast Ohio Regional Science and Engineering Fair Champions.

Our students gained insight into the greenhouse industry and learned how the family business expanded from two small backyard greenhouses to an operation that cultivates over 150 million young plants annually, shipping them along the east coast and as far west as Texas.

The Greenhouse and Nursery Management class toured Bob’s Market and Greenhouses, Inc. production greenhouse in Mason, WV. Our students gained insight into the greenhouse industry and learned how the family business expanded from two small backyard greenhouses to an operation that cultivates over 150 million young plants annually, shipping them along the east coast and as far west as Texas.

The AHS varsity cheerleaders earned 1st place in two divisions at the 2025 International Cheerleading Championships held at Universal Studios Orlando. The team also earned the High Point Award for being the top scoring team in all traditional cheer divisions.

The AHS ART CLUB, with support from the Joe Burrow Foundation and Athens Artists Memorial Project hosted a series of activities where students could slow down, make new friends and make some art together. Students who participated also got free art supplies! This was part of a full week of activities designed to encourage students to explore new ways to support their mental health.

The 2nd graders at Morrison-Gordon had a fantastic time celebrating Read Across America with some wonderful guest readers! A big thank you to Mayor Patterson, Nurse Heidi, and AHS seniors Maeve Schwarzel, Addie McGarry, and Lily Wolfe for spreading their love of reading with them.

The AHS Symphonic Choir spent a Friday at Ohio University participating with other regional choirs in the Ohio University Choral Invitational. The choir had the opportunity to perform for and work with visiting professors as well as OU experts. They enjoyed meeting other singers and hearing performances by OU voice faculty and choral ensembles.

Three students from Mrs. Gagliano’s Ceramics classes had their work selected out of 1,032 entries, for the NSECA National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition, where it will be seen by thousands of visitors who travel internationally to attend the 59th annual Conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NSECA). It is the first time AHS students have had work selected for a national exhibition of this caliber. Huge Congratulations to Achyn Binkly, Annabelle Lachman and Ludi Briscoe!

These four FFA members spent Tuesday, February 25th sharpening their skills at judging cattle, pigs, sheep and goats during the Gallia County Invitational Livestock Judging Contest.

Chelsie Pidcock is our 24-25 Athens FFA Treasurer. Her treasurer's book was graded in January, and her outstanding record keeping earned her a Gold Rating. She will receive her award during the Ohio FFA Convention in May. Congratulations on a job well done!!

Congratulations to Leif Siegel, a 9th grader at Athens High School, for being selected to represent Ohio at the Appalachian STEM Academy Bridge Program for the second year in a row!
This prestigious program, hosted by Oak Ridge Associated Universities in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, brings together top students to collaborate with master teachers, university researchers, and STEM professionals. Leif will engage in hands-on research projects, culminating in a final presentation to regional and state leaders.

Ms. Allen's job skills class are taking supplies donated by AHS students, families and staff over this week. This is going to help some very sweet pups have a nice couple of days.



On Monday, November 25, the freshman and sophomore student council officers from AHS helped the Athens Garden Club recover plants and landscaping blocks from a decorated highway traffic triangle before highway construction on the new roundabouts in The Plains at the intersection of US 33 and SR 682.

The Athens FFA students recently traveled to the Ohio Expo Center to compete in the State Animal Management and Aquarium Management Contests, showcasing their hard work and expertise! The teams placed 14th in the State and 1st in District 10.

On Friday, November 8, the AHS Student Council organized a beautiful Veterans Day assembly to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. Local veterans were graciously welcomed, enjoyed breakfast, and shared their inspiring stories with the students and staff. The assembly featured heartfelt poems, patriotic music performed by the band and choir, and a poignant account by Associate Superintendent Mr. Chad Springer about the true meaning of being a veteran.


The AHS Sophomore Class kicked off November with an unforgettable Fall Dance! Pumpkins were decorated, screams and cackling were heard, cornhole was played, monsters mashed, and great costumes were rewarded.
